Guide
Amazon main image requirements
The main image is the first thing shoppers see and the one Amazon checks most strictly. Here are the rules for background, size, product fill and file type, with where each comes from.
Checked October 2026. Amazon updates its guidance — Seller Central always wins.

| Rule | What Amazon says | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| Background | Pure white, RGB 255,255,255. (source A) | Grey, cream, gradients, shadows at the edge and transparent PNG areas do not qualify. |
| Size | At least 1000 px on the longest side for zoom; 1600+ px is described as optimal. (source A, B) | Under 1000 px, shoppers cannot zoom. Upscaling a small file adds no real detail. |
| Product fill | The product should fill 85% or more of the frame (85–100%). (source A, B) | Crop closer or shoot the product larger in the frame. |
| File type | JPEG (.jpg/.jpeg), TIFF (.tif/.tiff) or PNG (.png). (source A) | Export as JPEG or PNG if you are unsure. |
| Text and graphics | No added text, graphics or watermarks. (source A) | Badges, logos added in editing and “best seller” stamps are out. |
| Props | No props or accessories that are not included in the purchase. (source A) | Show only what the customer receives. |

Not covered: category exceptions (for example apparel or books) and any aspect-ratio rule — we could not confirm them in Amazon’s documentation.
Common reasons a main image gets rejected
Almost-white background
Soft shadows, a grey cast or JPEG artefacts at the edge mean the background is not RGB 255,255,255.
Product too small
A product floating in a large white frame fails the 85% fill guidance. Crop in or reshoot closer.
Too few pixels
Under 1000 px on the longest side disables zoom. Start from the original, not a thumbnail.
Added text or badges
Overlays belong on secondary images, not the main one.
Frequently asked questions
What background does an Amazon main image need?
A pure white background, RGB 255,255,255, according to Amazon's Seller Central guidance posts.
What size should an Amazon main image be?
At least 1000 px on the longest side so zoom works; Amazon's guidance calls 1600+ px optimal.
How much of the frame should the product fill?
85% or more of the frame, per Amazon's Seller Central guidance (85–100%).
Can I use an AI-generated image as my main image?
The rules above describe the image, not how it was made. Make sure it shows the real product accurately — labels and packaging must match what you sell — and check the current policy in Seller Central.
Do these rules differ by category?
They can. We did not verify category exceptions against Amazon's own documentation, so check your category in Seller Central.
